چکیده

S U M M A R Y We use a numerical simulation to investigate the response of sediment-filled valleys to P-SV seismic excitation. The calculation is carried out using the discrete wavenumber-boundary integral equation method. We study in particular the case of explosion sources located within a basin or in its vicinity. We show that large amplification or defocusing effects are related to the source location and to the shape of the basin. In the case of complex basins made up of several sedimentary layers, waves propagating along the various interfaces play an important role in shaping the seismic response of the basin.

Estimation of Source Location Using Curvature Analysis

A quadratic surface can be fitted to potential-field data within 3×3 windows, which allow us to calculate curvature attributes from its coefficients. Phillips (2007) derived an equation depending on the most negative curvature to obtain the depth and structural index of isolated sources from peak values of special functions. They divided the special functions into two categories: Model-specific...

A Generalized Reflection-transmission Coefficient Matrix and Discrete Wavenumber Method for Synthetic Seismograms

Expressions for displacements on the surface of a layered half-space due to point force are given in terms of generalized reflection and transmission coefficient matrices (Kennett, 1980) and the discrete wavenumber summation method (Bouchon, 1981). The Bouchon method with complex frequencies yields accurate near-field dynamic and static solutions. The algorithm is extended to include simultaneo...

Analysis of Euler-Bernoulli nanobeams: A mechanical-based solution

The accuracy and efficiency of the elements proposed by finite element method (FEM) considerably depend on the interpolating functions namely shape functions used to formulate the displacement field within the element. In the present study, novel functions, namely basic displacements functions (BDFs), are introduced and exploited for structural analysis of nanobeams using finite element method ...

Boundary temperature reconstruction in an inverse heat conduction problem using boundary integral equation method

‎In this paper‎, ‎we consider an inverse boundary value problem for two-dimensional heat equation in an annular domain‎. ‎This problem consists of determining the temperature on the interior boundary curve from the Cauchy data (boundary temperature and heat flux) on the exterior boundary curve‎. ‎To this end‎, ‎the boundary integral equation method is used‎. ‎Since the resulting system of linea...

Continuum Shape Sensitivity analysis of a mode-I fracture in functionally graded materials

This paper presents a new method for conducting a continuum shape sensitivity analysis of a crack in an isotropic, linear-elastic, functionally graded material. This method involves the material derivative concept from continuum mechanics, domain integral representation of the J-integral and direct differentiation. Unlike virtual crack extension techniques, no mesh perturbation is needed to cal...
